About AI LAB FDUL
A research lab at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL), dedicated to the legal, regulatory and institutional challenges raised by AI.
AI LAB FDUL exists to ensure that AI is developed and deployed in ways that are safe, trustworthy, and aligned with the rule of Law.
AI LAB FDUL works across three main areas:
Consultancy (law and compliance)
AI LAB FDUL supports public instituitions and private entities in areas such as human oversight, risk management, impact assessment, internal policies, codes of conduct and AI literacy obligations.
Controlled testing of AI systems
By combining legal analysis with controlled testing, AI LAB FDUL assists organisations making responsible decisions about the development and implementation of AI systems.
Literacy
AI LAB FDUL provides training for companies, public services, and other organisations, helping their teams use AI tools responsibly, critically, and productively.
AI LAB FDUL is based at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL). Its creation was inspired by the experience gained from teaching and researching the increasingly important intersection between law and artificial intelligence, particularly within FDUL’s postgraduate and LLM programmes.
Many of AI LAB FDUL’s founding members are lecturers, students, or alumni of the Faculty. While firmly rooted in FDUL, the Lab looks beyond the academic community, fostering dialogue and collaboration with civil society, public institutions, and the business sector.
